Terms of Service
Last updated: July 20, 2026
1. Acceptance of terms
By downloading, installing, or using Dotvault, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree to these terms, do not use the software.
2. Description of service
Dotvault is a local-first secret management tool for developers. The desktop app provides a free, local-only encrypted vault for API keys, environment variables, SSH keys, tokens and logins. The Pro plan adds a web app and encrypted cross-device sync. Dotvault operates on a zero-knowledge architecture: your data is encrypted on your device before it ever reaches us, and we cannot read it.
3. Eligibility and accounts
You must be at least 16 years old to use Dotvault. The desktop app requires no account. Using the web app or Pro sync requires creating an account with a valid email address; you're responsible for keeping your login credentials confidential and for all activity under your account.
4. Your master password
You are solely responsible for the security of your master password. Because Dotvault uses zero-knowledge encryption, we cannot reset your password or recover your data if you lose your master password. Any loss of the master password will result in the permanent loss of access to your vault. There is no backdoor, support ticket, or identity-verification process that gets it back.
5. Plans, billing, and cancellation
Dotvault's desktop app is free forever. Pro is a paid subscription (currently $9/month or $90/year) that unlocks the web app and encrypted sync, billed in advance through Stripe. Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled. You can cancel anytime from your account's billing portal; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and we don't provide partial refunds for unused time except where required by law. Prices may change with reasonable advance notice to active subscribers.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use Dotvault for any unlawful purpose or to store data you don't have the right to hold.
- Attempt to interfere with, disrupt, or gain unauthorised access to our infrastructure or other users' accounts.
- Reverse-engineer the software except to the extent applicable law expressly permits it.
- Resell, sublicense, or provide the service to third parties as your own product without our written permission.
7. Intellectual property
Dotvault, its logo, and its source code are owned by us and protected by copyright and trademark law. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the software in accordance with these terms. This licence doesn't grant you any right to our source code or trademarks.
8. Disclaimer of warranties
The software is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee that the software will be error-free, uninterrupted, or that it will meet your specific requirements. You use the software at your own risk.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages — including loss of data, profit, or business interruption — arising from your use of or inability to use the software, even if advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total liability for any claim arising from these terms is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose.
10. Termination
You may stop using Dotvault at any time; for Pro accounts, cancel your subscription and optionally request account deletion. We may suspend or terminate your account if you materially breach these terms, including for abusive or unlawful use of the service. On termination, your right to use the web app and sync ends; your local desktop vault is unaffected, since it never depended on an account.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. (Placeholder pending confirmation of the operating entity's actual jurisdiction — update before treating this as final.)
12. Changes to these terms
We may modify these terms as the product evolves. We'll update the "Last updated" date above, and for material changes we'll make a reasonable effort to notify Pro account holders by email. Continued use of the software after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the new terms.
